I didn't want to paint a particular coast.

I was more interested in that feeling when you look at something from a distance and don't immediately understand where the land ends and the water begins. The blue became deeper as I worked, while the lighter part of the painting stayed almost untouched.

Then I added gold, but only where I felt it was needed. In daylight it can be very quiet. In the evening, or when the light comes from the side, those details suddenly become much more visible.

The name “Fortune’s Coast” came later. For me, there is something in this painting about arriving somewhere without knowing exactly what you will find there.
